The Basics

What is the Germany Job Seeker Visa?

The Germany Job Seeker Visa is a long-stay residence permit that allows qualified professionals to live in Germany for up to six months to search for a job that matches their qualifications.

It does not permit you to work during the search itself but once you receive a job offer, you convert it into a work visa or EU Blue Card without leaving Germany. The newer points-based Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte) offers a flexible alternative that even allows limited part-time work while you look.

For skilled Indian professionals, it's one of the most direct legal routes to building a long-term career and eventually permanent residency in Europe's strongest economy.

The Germany Job Seeker Visa is a long-stay residence permit that allows qualified professionals to live in Germany for up to six months to find a job matching their qualifications. It does not allow you to work during the search, but once you secure a job offer, you can convert it into a work visa or EU Blue Card from within Germany.

No, the traditional Job Seeker Visa only permits you to search and attend interviews  not to take up employment. However, the newer points based Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte) does allow limited part-time work (up to 20 hours per week) while you look for a full-time role.

It is valid for up to six months. Within this period, you’re expected to find suitable employment. Once you receive a qualifying job offer, you apply to convert your status to a work visa or EU Blue Card without needing to return to India.

You need a recognised Bachelor’s or Master’s degree (or equivalent), relevant work experience in your field, proof of sufficient funds to support yourself during the stay, valid travel health insurance, and proof of accommodation. Your qualification should be recognised as equivalent to a German degree.

You must prove you can financially support yourself during your stay typically demonstrated through a blocked account or equivalent proof of funds of around €6,000 to €6,600 for the six-month period. This is your own money for living expenses, not a fee.

The Job Seeker Visa is a straightforward six-month visa for qualified professionals to search for work. The Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte) is a newer points-based system that scores you on qualifications, experience, language, and age and crucially, it permits limited part-time work while you search, offering more flexibility.

Generally, dependents cannot accompany you during the job-seeking phase itself. However, once you secure employment and convert to a work visa or EU Blue Card, you can bring your spouse and children under family reunification and your spouse is typically allowed to work.

Yes, indirectly. The Job Seeker Visa itself is temporary, but once you find a job and switch to a work visa or EU Blue Card, you build toward permanent residency. With an EU Blue Card, PR can often be achieved in as little as 21 to 33 months, depending on your German language level.
